These are the San Juans

Day 51: Camp above Rincon la Osa to Stony Pass, ~22 miles, ~808 miles total

A few pictures from a memorable day. Note photos were taken with the phone, as the camera battery died the day before.

Sunrise from camp, looking out to the mountains beyond Rincon la Osa.

Sometimes travel is across snow free alpine meadows.

Sometimes travel is across fields of mixed consolidated snow.

The unnamed rolling hills a few miles before Stony Pass.

Sometimes we wear snowshoes to cross saturated willow marshes.

Ha ha, I did not know they plowed the Stony Pass road. I actually drove up there last fall from Silverton. The drive so unnerved me that I accidentally left my car unlocked when I started my backpacking trip. Luggage in the car and all. Part of the time on the hike I worried about the drive back down the hill. Nothing got stolen, car still there, I slowly drove down the hill, no deaths. Colorado is amazing. I will be hiking RMNP to Encampment WY in August as a series of day hikes and short backpacks. With luck I will have finished the Colorado CDT by the end.

They sure do! Lots of jeeps and little ATVs go over that road. We were happy to walk down it and then get a ride back up (and not drive down). It was steep walking! At least cars have four wheels. But my those turns…! We just got to Steamboat via Grand Lake. The loop hike in RMNP was gorgeous and all the park wildlife were pretty tame. Briefly toed into the Never Summer Wilderness and want to explore around there for mountains and wildflowers. Looking forward to the next leg, but soaking up the benefits of our last Colorado trail town. I will have to come back to CO for a few alternates, for now I’ll be content to have walked across the whole state.
